From 1994 to 2015, 515 hydraulic structures were built for the benefit of 18 442 families: wells, drillings, rain water butts, retention ponds and sand filters. These projects were carried out in partnership with Codegaz (humanitarian action of French gas company employees) and Blois’ Lions club.

18 442 families in Battambang, Preah Vihear, Kompong Cham, Takeo and Svay Rieng province now benefit from their infrastructures:

• Traditional wells: Codeaukhmer initiated the restoration of existing wells and the drilling of new ones in the most adapted areas. Our teams detect the subsoils where good quality water is accessible all year long. Thanks to these wells, the villagers can always access clear water even during the dry season when the temperature can reach 40°C.
• Sand filtration systems (or filtration with by-pass) for the areas which do not have suitable sub-soils. These wells use a system of communicating vessels. The non-drinkable water of a pond is lead downwards to a sand layer, and filtrated through it. The main impurities are taken away, and a reserve of clear water is created. A well is built above the artificial source, and the water can be pumped.
• Rainwater collectors: tanks to store and filter rainwater were installed in the villages which needed them. This water is used for washed oneself, and, once boiled, for cooking.

Once the water available, it seemed necessary to ensure the cleanliness of it and a proper access to hygiene thanks to sanitation infrastructures:

Between 2007 and 2010, with the support of GRET Cambodia and ISF, Codeaukhmer conducted a study for the improvement of Bavel’s (Battambang province) and Samrongyoung’s (province of Takeo) sewage systems. Three bathrooms were renovated between 2013 and 2014. Meanwhile, we support hygiene promotion in those villages.
